Retro-commissioning (RCx):
Retrocommissioning (RCx) is the process of improving the performance of an existing building’s systems, typically focusing on energy efficiency, operational effectiveness, and occupant comfort. Unlike commissioning, which is typically performed during the construction or renovation of a building, retrocommissioning is done on buildings that are already in operation. It aims to optimize and fine-tune building systems that may have deteriorated over time, not been fully optimized, or become less efficient due to changes in use or other factors.
Key aspects of retrocommissioning include:
System Assessment: A thorough review and evaluation of existing building systems (such as HVAC, lighting, electrical, plumbing, and control systems) to identify inefficiencies, operational issues, and opportunities for improvement.
Data Collection and Analysis: Gathering performance data and conducting tests on systems to pinpoint problems or areas where energy use can be reduced without sacrificing comfort or functionality.
